Movie Review: Holiday Engagement

Yes, I know it’s July and most would consider it too early to watch “Christmas movies,” but how could I resist when the Hallmark Channel is running them all weekend long?  The short answer is, I couldn’t resist and I didn’t even try.

One great movie I caught today was Holiday Engagement starring Shelley Long (from Cheers), Sam McMurray, Bonnie Summerville and Jordan Bridges (Frankie from “Rizzoli & Isles” on TNT).

In this movie, Hillary (played by Summerville) is feeling constant pressure from her mother (Long) to get married.  This year, she thinks she will finally meet with her mother’s approval when she brings her fiancee to spend Thanksgiving with the family. A week before the trip, Hillary’s fiancee calls off the engagement.  Desperate not to disappoint her mother, Hillary hires an actor (Bridges) to pretend to be her husband-to-be.  Things get complicated when the real fiancee shows up and Hillary must decide whom she really loves.

Yes, the plot is very similar to the Melissa Joan Hart movie, Holiday in Handcuffs, except there is no kidnapping involved and Holiday Engagement is more “laid back” and less campy.  Don’t get me wrong, I really do enjoy both movies.

The DVD for Holiday Engagement is scheduled to be released on October 16, 2012.  This is a good movie for the entire family and don’t be concerned that this is a “chick flick.”  I think a lot of guys will like it too.

I rate this movie a good, solid B+
