Netflix is a great resource for watching obscure Christmas movies and I put it to good use today. After getting home early from work, I fired up Netflix and watched that 1964 cult sci-fi classic, “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.” (Affiliate Link)
Sure the acting was over the top, but, unlike Reginald Owen in yesterday’s review, this was intentionally so.
In the movie, Martian parents are worried that there kids are watching so much Earth television because it is making the children long for Earth traditions like Christmas and Santa Claus. After consulting an ancient Martian elder, it is decided that the children of Mars deserve to have some of these things. This leads the Martian leader, Kimar (Leonard Hicks) comes up with a plan to kidnap Santa (John Call) and take him to Mars.
I won’t give away the entire plot, but let’s just say it’s a fun movie with a heartwarming story. If you’re looking for great acting and an epic film, this isn’t it. On the other hand, if you want a nice, campy Christmas film, check this one out. You’ll like it.
Merry Christmas, y’all.
